Ambatovy Pipeline SCADA

Back to case studies

Nickel laterite slurry pipeline SCADA and Pipeline Advisor™

Ausenco's controls specialty group was selected to provide a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for the Ambatovy nickel laterite slurry pipeline system, which transports 7.2 million tonnes per year (Mt/y) of laterite ore from the Ambatovy mine site to terminal facilities at Tomatave on the east coast of Madagascar.

Ausenco’s pipeline group also provided conceptual design, basic and detailed engineering, and execution support services for the concentrate pipeline and its ancillaries.

The pipeline system includes:

  • A 220 km, 24-inch outside diameter buried pipeline
  • One pump station located at the ore preparation plant
  • Three pressure monitoring stations along the pipeline route
  • One main valve and choke station along the pipeline route
  • Pipeline terminal facilities and choke station

Our controls group designed and fabricated the SCADA system, and provided four self-contained solar power units and a long-distance fibre optic telecommunications system.

We also provided Ausenco’s Pipeline Advisor™ software, an operations tool that offers process optimisation through remote, real-time monitoring and analysis capabilities as well as leak detection, batch/interface tracking and process control advice.
