Cerrejón Coal Supply Chain

Back to case studies

Evaluating expansion options

Carbones del Cerrejón operates an open pit coal mine, 150 km rail line, and the Puerto Bolivar export terminal.

In a series of studies, Ausenco examined expansion options to increase exports to 40 Mt/y. We developed a detailed supply chain model to evaluate the proposed expansion options.

We evaluated key metrics including:

  • the throughput capacities of the mine, rail and port operations
  • expected ship queuing
  • blending requirements at the mine
  • the impact of major unplanned downtime.

Our model included all operations from the run-of-mine stockpiles to the port and was based on extensive analysis of actual operating data.
