Engineering a new coal transport system

Ausenco completed the basic engineering of a new 90 km heavy haul railway to transport up to 28 Mt/y of coal from a number of mines to a new coal terminal in the Gulf of Venezuela.

Our scope of work included the design of two mine loadouts and the alignment design from the mines to the port unloading facilities, development of a rail operations plan, review and selection of locomotives and railcars, railway maintenance shops, one rail and two road/rail bridges, simulation modelling, capital and operating costs and a detailed implementation schedule.

Previous work on the project included modal evaluation (road, rail, conveyor) to select optimum loadout locations, development of terminal layouts, infrastructure and storage, and preparation of detailed capital costs, operating costs and staffing requirements for a bankable document.
