Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation Operations

Back to case studies

Optimised operations

The Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) is located in south Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. It manages the operations of the Bingham Canyon Mine which has become the largest man-made excavation on earth.

As part of the operations, KUCC manage the maintenance parts warehouse which is responsible for procurement, storage, assembly and dispatch of materials to the site on scheduled transportation. This function is referred to as the Cross-Dock.

Ausenco was contracted to provide full operational services to the Cross-Dock which included distribution of maintenance materials and job kits from the Cross-Dock to the site, including distribution to nominated in-pit work sites, parts stores and the copper concentrator.

The scope of the operations also included integration of the maintenance materials supply chain with vendors, conducted in conjunction with Rio Tinto Procurement to provide optimisation of inbound distribution and acceptance of vendor accountability for inventory, parts, information delivery and parts preparation.

Services also extended to integration of the maintenance supply chain with KUCC’s maintenance function. This included deployment of a small number of specialised personnel to work with existing teams, and to act as a value adding link in the materials supply chain.
