MBP Bauxite Ore Slurry Pipeline

Back to case studies

Mineracao Bauxita Paragominas (MBP) selected Ausenco to perform a full range of services for the world’s first commercial long-distance bauxite ore slurry pipeline.

The pipeline system is designed to initially transport 8 million tonnes per year (Mt/y), and later expand up to 13 Mt/y, of bauxite ore from the Miltonia mine site in the state of Para to terminal facilities in Barcarena on the Amazon estuary near Belem.

Ausenco was selected to perform a full range of services, from laboratory testing and feasibility studies through to start-up support and operator training.

The pipeline system delivers bauxite to a new dedicated filter plant and includes:

  • A 244 km, 24-inch outside diameter buried pipeline
  • One pump station located at the beneficiation plant
  • A second intermediate pump station to be installed as production increases
  • Four pressure monitoring stations along the pipeline route
  • Pipeline terminal facilities
  • Fibre optic telecommunications system
  • Pipeline Advisor™ for leak detection and process optimisation

Operations commenced in 2007.
