Refractory Gold Tailings Process Control System

Back to case studies

PanTerra Gold Ltd. (formerly EnviroGold Ltd.) selected Ausenco for the system integration of the process control system for the automation of their facility.

Las Lagunas is a refractory gold/silver tailings reprocessing facility located approximately 105 kilometres north of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The project is expected to produce 65,000 oz Au and 600,000 oz Ag annually.

The process control system is based on process automation controllers with DCS like functionality for ease of support and usability while maintaining a high level of control functionality and flexibility.

Ausenco’s scope included programming using in house template libraries modified to meet PanTerra Gold’s desired look and feel. The PCS is distributed using fibre optic network to reduce wiring and increase reliability along with redundant servers with automatic and transparent data transfer. The system also allows configuration changes without interruption and includes extensive data collection, analysis and reporting to optimise operations and provide KPI’s.

The process includes ultrafine grinding, Albion Oxidative Leach, Carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes and consists of over 3000 I/O, extensive use of VFD’s, and process analysers. The system was simulated in our development centre to insure proper sequencing and functionality and to reduce field time bringing the system online.

Based on this work, Ausenco was also awarded a contract for field start-up and commissioning services. Operations commenced successfully in 2012.
