Reliability and defect elimination project

Back to case studies

The Capcoal project comprises of an underground mine, open cut mine and a coal preparation plant. Together these mines produce in excess of 9 Mt/y of prime quality hard coking coal, pulverised coal injection and thermal coal. Capcoal is located in the heart of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Australia.

Ausenco Rylson provided specialist reliability engineering and defect elimination support to one of the Capcoal underground coal mining operations. This support included:

  • Reliability data analysis
  • Failure identification and root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Specialist techniques to reduce the likelihood or frequency of the failures
  • Maintenance strategy optimisation
  • Optimisation of predictive maintenance activities
  • Implementing a reliability program to ensure equipment would meet its requirements over its life-cycle.

Achievements

Through this project Ausenco Rylson implemented a structured defect elimination process that delivered and continues to deliver increased asset reliability and availability whilst optimising resources. These achievements amount to signifi cant cost reductions for Anglo American Metallurgical Coal at the Capcoal underground coal mining operations.
