EPCM Project delivered in remote mountainous location

The Rosia Montana Project was designed to process a nominal feed rate through the grinding circuit of 13.5 Mt/y. The crushing circuit included a 62” x 75” gyratory crusher. The grinding circuit included a 36’ SAG mill complete with a 15 MW gearless drive and two ball mills each with 10 MW dual pinion drives.

The plant site is located in a remote, mountainous area within Transylvania with challenging geotechnical conditions. The total average drawn power of the plant was estimated to be 57 MW (peak 62 MW) supplied from the local grid.

Ausenco was engaged to perform the detailed engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services for the processing plant and associated infrastructure. The scope of services included responsibility for all engineering for process plant and infrastructure, permitting, global procurement and logistics, construction management and commissioning for the facility.

The project was delivered despite the following challenges:

  • Geotechnical issues
  • Site layout constraints
  • Prevailing climatic conditions (cold weather plant)
  • Design of system to handle high levels of trash from old workings
  • Large leach and CIL tanks, 4500 m³capacity
  • Large elution circuit, 60 tonnes carbon per day.
