Simandou Port Development

The Simandou Project, located in the Republic of Guinea, provides access to one of the world’s largest untapped high grade iron ore resources. It has the potential to make Guinea one of the world’s top iron ore exporters and comprises:

  • A world-class iron ore deposit with estimated reserves of over 2 billion tonnes grading 65.5% Fe, designed to produce 100 Mt/y for a period in excess of 40 years;
  • A railway, the Trans-Guinean: a multi-use multi-user railway line 650 km long linking south-east Guinea with the coast along the Southern Growth Corridor; and
  • A deep-water port at Moribaya: the multi-use, multi-user facility will be the first in Guinea to provide access to large cargo ships.

Ausenco was involved in the two phases of the Front End Loading (FEL-1) project; the first included upgrading the existing facilities of the Buchanan port to support the start-up operations, and the second phase required the development of a high capacity greenfield port in the region. Both phases required supporting studies for energy generation alternatives and rail alignments.

Ausenco's scope within the Simandou Project included support to VALE BSGR on logistic aspects, including:

  • Site selection study for a new greenfield port;
  • Identification of rail corridors from the mine to the coast;
  • Development of strategic concepts for the onshore and offshore components of the greenfield port; and
  • Development of conceptual engineering for the existing Buchanan Port to support start-up operations.

In addition, dynamic operation simulations were conducted to support the engineering developments mentioned above.

An energy supply study was also conducted as that is a major concern for in the region. This project was undertaken as a joint effort by Ausenco´s Belo Horizonte and Vancouver offices.
