Suncor MacKay River Expansion SAGD EDS

Back to case studies

Ausenco completed the engineering design specification (EDS) for the MRX expansion project, a greenfield 42,000 bbl/d addition to the existing MacKay River 1 facility, in 2008. The MRX expansion includes a 'super pad' that combines two well pads with a total of 47 well pairs, group and test separators, and steam generation from four on-pad drum boilers.

The central processing facility (CPF) consists of oil treatment, water treatment and utilities. Evaporative water treatment was selected for the produced water to provide boiler feed water to the drum boilers. The design also includes desalters and a diluent recovery unit (DRU) to supply hot bitumen to sales. An alternate design without the DRU was also included in the scope.

Modifications were required to the existing MacKay River 1 facility for crossover lines to tie-in MRX.

The EDS package for the entire project - wellpads, pipelines and CPF - was completed in eight months.

Project highlights:

  • EDS for a greenfield 42,000 bbl/d SAGD project
  • super pads with on-pad steam generation
  • evaporative water treatment and drum boiler technology
  • fast-track project (8 months duration).
