Ausenco provides cutting-edge engineering and project management services in the resources and
energy sector, combining ingenuity and insight to deliver extraordinary results for our clients. From the
icy sea off the coast of Russia to the jungles of Southeast Asia, and as far as the peaks of the Andes, we’ve
proven ourselves under some of the most challenging conditions on earth. With our global management
experience, geographic reach and unrivalled track record, we excel in delivering large-scale projects and
services across the full project lifestyle. Here at Ausenco our approach is simple; we discover through
ingenuity and lead by example.
Here at Ausenco, we’re used to challenges, but designing and constructing China’s Jinfeng Gold BIOX®
Project, the largest known Carlin-type deposit in China, presented a different level of difficulty altogether.
In order to meet the terms of the contract we had to successfully navigate a labyrinth of geographic,
cultural and geopolitical hurdles. For starters, due to its remote, mountainous location and high rainfall
there was little existing infrastructure to house a workforce. The plant was also the first western executed
gold project in China, thus it involved a great deal of collaboration with Chinese authorities, labour,
and local engineering organizations. As a result we have forged many strategic relationships with local
engineers, suppliers and fabricators, which will be advantageous for future projects with international
clients.
Many cases in the past have called for an ingenious solution and careful teamwork, but this particular
project called for many. Our scope of work included working closely with the owner as he developed a
new block cave mine beneath an operating sub-level cave mine, while we developed the surface and
underground facilities that supported the transition of the Ridgeway Gold Mine from sub-level caving to
block caving. This effectively meant that all personnel, plant and equipment on the new project had to
be transported via an 8km decline through a fully operating mine. To top it all off, extreme conditions
were experienced at the site, ranging from snow-covered work on the surface to heavily restricted space
and access underground. Despite everything, we finished the project ahead of time and on budget, and
assisted in delivering a better NPV than expected. Additionally, we proved a sound commercial outcome
and worked in the team that pointed the way to the next development – that of a panel cave operation in
the adjacent mine.
In Queensland’s Bowen Basin lies Isaac Plains Coal Preparation and Handling Plant, now open 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week, thanks to Ausenco. When Ausenco was tasked with providing operational and
maintenance services at the wash plant, we used our proven operations and maintenance improvement
processes and systems to debottleneck the plant and to increase availability and utilisation. Isaac Plains
is the perfect example of the strength of our operational support services and the ingenious way in which
we are able to optimize our clients’ resources by combining them with our own.
When considering the best approach to redevelop DP World Vancouver’s container terminal, halting or
disrupting the terminal’s operations was out of the question. Ausenco successfully extended, deepened
and strengthened two berths in a way that kept the terminal fully operational. Ausenco’s team of
engineers and construction managers safely completed all work within two years, doubling the terminal’s
capacity and significantly improving container handling operations.
We’ve taken on some of the world’s most testing engineering challenges, and a slurry pipeline intended
to transport 2.3 million tonnes of iron concentrate 171km steeply uphill each year was no exception.
Especially considering the rough terrain, resulting in the need for 10 tunnels and several large-scale aerial
crossings to avoid geo-hazard locations along the rugged route. Breaking many records, the Da Hong Shan
Pipeline is one of the longest pipelines in China. It also has the highest operating pressure of any pipeline
in China, is one of the few slurry pipelines in the world to pump steeply uphill over most of its length, and
boasts the largest total lift of any pipeline.
Straddling the border between Chile and Argentina, at an altitude of over 4500m is Pascua Lama Gold
Mine, and the proposed location for its accompanying tailings storage facility, designed and engineered
by Ausenco. Due to the location and environmental considerations of this project, there were many
hurdles to overcome. For starters, the mine is located in an extremely cold climate within the Andes
Mountains. Due to its location along the border, the project also had to adhere to a transnational treaty
between Chile and Argentina, and protocol zones that controlled most of the engineering work. Despite
these challenges, Ausenco produced a design that incorporated a unique solution for operation in the
extreme climate, achieving considerable environmental safeguards, as well as significant cost savings.
Traditionally, city residents aren’t overly receptive to the idea of having a sewage handling system built in
the middle of their city. So when Ausenco was hired to provide the design engineering and construction
support engineering to the City of Vancouver for a new energy centre and associated pump station the
situation posed a challenge. However, in true Ausenco style we delivered an unconventional, yet effective
alternative energy solution, and the first application of untreated sewage heat recovery of its kind in
North America. By enlisting the expertise of a public art consultant we also transformed the heat plant
into a landmark art piece, thereby earning the support of its various stakeholders.
It’s not often you hear of a city powered almost entirely by a wind farm. Ausenco was hired to install six
2.3 MW wind turbines at Verve Energy’s Grasmere Wind Farm, helping to produce enough electricity each
year to meet 80% of Albany Australia’s electricity needs with clean, inexhaustible renewable energy. Built
to high social and environmental standards, Grasmere is expected to save 43,500 tonnes of greenhouse
gases per year, which is the equivalent to taking 10,000 cars off the road.
