Iron concentrate and water pipelines and thickened tailings and paste surface disposal

There is no such thing as a typical project. We tackled freezing temperatures and rugged terrain to deliver feasibility, basic and detailed engineering, start-up and commissioning solutions on the Bao Tou pipeline system, the largest iron ore concentrate pipeline system in China. Located in Inner Mongolia, China, the 145 kilometre pipeline system transports 5.5 million tonnes of iron concentrate per year.  Also transporting 2,500 m3/h of water, the pipeline system will include the longest water pipeline with one pump station in China. The pipeline, which will be commissioned 2010, lies in a region where daytime temperatures can be as low as -34 Celsius.

The pipeline is controlled and monitored with a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system designed by our Control Systems business unit.  Our specialist pipeline control and monitoring technology, Pipeline Advisor, will maximise safety and deliver ongoing operational efficiencies. Pipeline Advisor is an operations tool that offers remote, real-time monitoring and analysis capabilities via the internet as well as leak detection, batch/ interface tracking and process control advice.

The project has reduced the environmental impact to the city of Baotou from Baotou Steel Bai Yun West Mine tailings, and has created favorable conditions for Baotou Steel to further bring tailings under control. Since pipelines are buried underground, they protect the ecological environment. This construction project will be a good role model for energy savings and reduction of emissions.
