Brand:
Ausenco Sandwell
Client:
P.H.Glatfelter Company

This EPC contract was for a cogeneration facility comprising a circulating fluidised bed boiler, turbine generator, surface condenser and cooling tower, feedwater and feedwater makeup treatment system, and fuel handling and ash disposal systems. The boiler is a field erected Pyropower circulating fluidised bed unit, designed to fire coal, anthracite culm, wood waste, sludge and oil. It is rated at 400,000 lb/h at 1500 psig and 950° F. The ABB double automatic extraction, condensing turbine is rated at 45,400 kW at 1450 psig and 950° F, with a 57,400 kVA air cooled, brushless exciter generator. The electrostatic precipitator is a Research Cottrell single chamber, rigid electrode unit with 6 electrical fields. Auxiliary equipment includes multi-media filters, activated carbon and two-bed demineraliser and mixed bed polisher system, and ultra-filtration system; condensate polisher; deaerator, feedwater heater and feedwater pumps; surface condenser and cooling tower. Handling systems were provided for wood waste and sludge; coal conveying; pneumatic and mechanical ash disposal. Electrical power distribution, utility tie-line controls and integrated distributed control systems also formed part of the contract. The plant was constructed at a costeffective $1,450/kW and began operation in May 1989. It operates at over 96% availability and exceeds guarantees. Surplus power is sold to the local utility.
