The Fraser River Port Authority (FRPA) manages the Fraser River Port from the river-mouth to 100 km upstream. One of the Port's largest facilities is the Fraser Surrey Docks (FSD) located on the main channel, about 20 km upstream. Like other terminals on the West Coast, FSD is experiencing a huge growth in the number of containers handled annually. As part of a modernisation and expansion program, FSD took delivery of two new 65 tonne cranes in early April 2005. In mid 2004, FRPA hired Ausenco Sandwell to plan FSD’s electrical power system expansion, specify the equipment, negotiate with BC Hydro and design the new 12/25 kV substation to power the new cranes. We developed a plan to power the FSD for the next 30 years as the basis for the design of Substation 10, which has capacity for future cranes 6, 7 & 8, all expected by 2010. Ausenco Sandwell also inspected the equipment at the factories and managed the substation construction. This work was completed on schedule, and under budget. Substation 10 is now commissioned and is powering the two cranes while FSD works up the cranes to full capacity.
