Every year in Quebec, 6 to 7 million tires are discarded, creating an environmental hazard. Tires not recycled are stored outdoors. Over 30 million tires are accumulated in several storage sites.
Ausenco Sandwell evaluated the feasibility of using Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) in the pulp and paper industry for steam and power generation. By mixing TDF with biomass, significant savings are possible (replacing expensive fossil fuel and reducing land filling costs). TDF burning tests were performed on one existing biomass boiler.
