Ausenco Sandwell provided engineering services for a contractor-led EPC project for a power plant comprising a combination fuel boiler, turbine generator, feedwater and feedwater makeup treatment system, and fuel handling and ash disposal systems.

The boiler is a field erected CE VU-40 combination wood waste, pulverised coal, fuel oil and natural gas fired unit, rated at 550,000 lb/h at 1500 psig and 950° F. The GE double automatic extraction, back pressure exhaust turbine is rated at 35,000 kW at 1450 psig and 950° F, with a 43,750 kVA air cooled, brushless exciter generator. The electrostatic precipitator is an Environmental Elements two chamber, rigid electrode unit, with 4 fields on each side.

Auxiliary equipment and systems include up-flow sand filters, two-bed demineraliser and mixed-bed polisher system; condensate polisher; deaerator, feedwater heater and feedwater pumps; wood waste and long wood receiving, chipping, screening and hogging, and reclaiming and conveying system; vacuum pneumatic ash conveying and disposal system; electrical power distribution and integrated distributed control system.

Initial operation of the plant began after completion of construction in only 20 months; 3 months ahead of schedule. The facility provides Tennessee River with the ability to utilise low cost fuels to generate 60% of the electrical power needs of the pulp and paper mill.
