Ausenco Sandwell designed the SkyTrain extension through the Grandview Cut in Vancouver. The 1.3 km long section of the twin guideway structure is on slab-on-grade through the existing cutting. At the bottom of the slope a retaining wall was designed to support the backfill under the slab-on-grade and to resist the crash loads from trains operating on the existing BNSF track. Above the guideway, the up slopes to the cutting were stabilised with a mixture of soil nailing and greenwall type retaining walls to preserve the park like setting. The project included the tie-ins at each end to elevated guideways, commercial station, and special retaining walls under bridges crossing the cut.
