Hartland Landfill Bio-Gas Utilization Project

Brand:
Ausenco Sandwell
Client:
Maxim Power Corp. and Capital Regional District (CRD)
Location:
Saanich, BC, Canada
Completed:
2004

Maxim Power and the Capital Regional District (CRD) invested in a biogas utilization project at the Hartland Landfill in Saanich, BC (servicing greater Victoria). The objectives of the project were to be cost effective, reliable, environmentally sensitive and adequately sized to be used in all of the present and future projected landfill gas flows.

Maxim awarded the detailed design contract for the landfill gas conditioning equipment to Ausenco Sandwell. In addition, CRD also awarded a detailed design contract to Ausenco Sandwell for the flare station upgrade.

The project included the design of a gas chilling and condensate separation system, a blower upgrade and a new surplus gas flare – all located at the landfill. The unattended landfill facility is fully automated and interfaced with the power generation control system. The gas utilization system currently generates up to 1.6 MW of power using a packaged Caterpillar 3520 engine genset. Provision has been made for the installation of a second unit if the projected increase in landfill gas is achieved.
