John Hart Bridge and Interchange

Brand:
Ausenco Sandwell
Client:
Ministry of Transportation of BC
Location:
Prince George, BC, Canada

The John Hart Bridge in Prince George carries two lanes of southbound Highway 97 traffic and a sidewalk over the Nechako River, and parallels the old bridge which carries the Highway 97 northbound traffic. The Project also included a replacement overpass interchange bridge to carry Highway 97 over Nechako Road.

In Joint Venture with Walter Construction, Ausenco Sandwell designed both the bridge and the overpass. The John Hart Bridge, which crosses the fast flowing Nechako River, is 230 metres in length and consists of six continuous spans with five river piers. The concrete leaf type piers are supported on spread footings, which were constructed in steel sheet pile cofferdams. The abutments are the spill-through type with spread footings, two concrete columns, and concrete seatings. The superstructure consists of prestressed concrete bridge girders - built in to the pier caps for continuity - which support a concrete deck. The deck slab consists of precast first stage panels with a cast-in place second stage composite concrete slab. The North Nechako Road Overpass carries the highway over a busy junction and is a two span continuous structure with prestressed girders, built in to the pier, supporting a concrete deck. The pier cap is supported on six columns on a spread footing. The abutments consist of bank seats set behind MSE abutment walls. This structure was complicated by its extreme skew to the roadway below. Construction of the bridge was completed in 2001.
