This bridge carries an access road over two rail tracks within the Westshore coal terminal. With one mile long unit trains using the terminal, the bridge provides uninterrupted access within the site. The Westshore coal terminal is built on a dredged island underlain by soft compressible alluvial soils. As a result, structures that impose significant foundation loads on the dredged fill are subject to settlements up to 1m. In addition, the severe skew of this bridge results in abutment configurations that produce differential settlements and rotations in opposing directions. It is not possible to eliminate the settlement by piling since the settlement results from deep seated soil consolidation. Ausenco Sandwell designed the sub-structures to tolerate the settlements with mechanically reinforced embankments and wingwalls. The simply supported superstructure is designed to tolerate the twisting effect of the opposing abutment rotations, with the use of discretely supported prestressed concrete box girders. The span of the bridge is 17.5 m and carries a 6m wide roadway with a design highway loading of HS-20.
