The Pattullo Bridge was built in 1938. The GVTA retained Ausenco Sandwell in 2006 to conduct condition and seismic assessments, and develop preliminary design for the bridge's retrofitting and rehabilitation. Ausenco Sandwell conducted a detailed condition inspection of the bridge, which identified the deck slab to be in poor condition. Preliminary designs were done for replacement of the deck slab and rehabilitation with an overlay system. In addition, the project team investigated a number of traffic safety improvements and prepared preliminary designs for installation of median and roadside barriers, and widening of the curve to the south approach. Ausenco Sandwell also completed analyses of the bridge which identified numerous seismic deficiencies, investigated seismic retrofitting options, and recommended a base isolation retrofit using pendulum bearings. Non-linear true history analyses identified a number of elements that would still require retrofitting with base isolation, including crossheads, main pier columns and footings to the approach bents
