Ausenco Sandwell started planning with CFI in 1990 for the $279 million asset renewal program. A phased program began in early 1992 to meet stringent new environmental regulations and enable the mill to consistently achieve target rates and minimise operating costs.
The first phase, to complete replacement of the recovery boiler island, started up in June 1993. Ausenco Sandwell provided full preliminary engineering and assisted CFI with permitting, the EPC contract and final acceptance of the new facility.
In the second phase, Ausenco Sandwell completed preliminary engineering and assisted CFI with the preparation and award of 3 EPC contracts for lime kiln and recausticising, brown stock screening and oxygen delignification, and for NCG incineration and turpentine collection equipment. Chip thickness screening was also installed.
Ausenco Sandwell was also responsible for detailed design and construction management for the balance of the program. Major features include: tertiary effluent treatment in the form of color clarification, digester chip feed system and digester vessel modifications, brown stock washing, bleach plant improvements, pulp machine wet end and dry end upgrades, spills collection, mill wide process integration of both asset renewal phases and integration of mill-wide DCS, and conversion to DCS of existing power boiler.
