Water supply tunnel designed for maximum seismic endurance

Ausenco Sandwell is completing the detailed design, and will provide engineering services during construction of this new water main within a tunnel under the Fraser River. The new crossing will provide increased capacity to meet future demand and be safe from scour impact from a very active seismic zone in North America.

Phase 1, Preliminary Design Review and Alignment Confirmation Objectives, explored and evaluated a deeper tunnel design profile that is in bedrock, to assess seismic performance of the tunnel using peak ground accelerations of 0.5 g and 0.7 g, and finalise the shaft locations and tunnel alignment. Environmental, social, and archaeological impacts were considered for securing the required permits.
