Ausenco Sandwell did the design of these two new four lane bridges on the Vancouver Island Highway. Puntledge River Bridge consists of two 41m spans with continuous steel I-girders and a composite reinforced concrete deck slab. The girders are supported on a twin column centre pier on a spread footing and simple abutment seatings with MSE walls. The MSE walls extend 90m and 60m north and south of the bridge and minimise the footprint of the embankments in the environmentally sensitive wetlands, either side of the river. The Puntledge Penstock Road overpass consists of a 19m clear span structure that bridges the Penstock and service roads. This structure consists of prestressed concrete box girders supported on piled abutments with lightweight EPS backfill.
