The Rapid Transit Office hired Ausenco Sandwell for a study to define the alignment and costs of the proposed Vancouver tunnelled segment for the Richmond/Airport to Vancouver Rapid Transit Project. Ausenco Sandwell together with subconsultants investigated numerous alignments and profiles between S.W. Marine Drive in south Vancouver and the proposed terminus at Burrard Inlet in downtown Vancouver. The recommended bored tunnel alignment would use Davie and Granville Streets, avoiding underground structures below high rise buildings. Station locations were investigated and eight or nine station locations were recommended and conceptual drawings for the stations prepared. At the south and north ends of the segment at-grade and cut-and-cover tunnel options were also reviewed. Detailed cost estimates indicated construction costs of between $800M and $900M, depending on the tunnel diameters, number of stations, and extent of bored tunnel selected.
