The existing Johnston Bridge crosses the Quesnel River in the City of Quesnel, BC. The existing bridge consists of four spans with a length of 158 m with steel I-stringers and steel grating decks. Ausenco Sandwell conducted an inspection of the bridge and found the steel grating and steel stringers to be in poor condition. Ausenco Sandwell is designing a new deck to replace the existing grating. The new deck will consist of the Sandwich Plate System (SPS). With this patented system, the deck will consist of two plates bonded to an elastomeric layer forming a sandwich system. The advantages of replacing the grating with SPS will be:
• Similar weight and cost to existing system
• Fast installation
• Provides better protection for steel stringers and floor beams from the elements
• Composite action will increase the strength of the floor beams
