VANOC hired Ausenco Sandwell for the design of the Nordic Venue for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The Nordic Venue is located in the Callaghan Valley approximately 10 km from Whistler Village. The venue has 8 km of roads and 14 km of trails serving the various events which include ski jumps, cross country skiing trails and biathlon facilities. The roads and trails include 13 bridges and 3 culverts at stream, trail and pedestrian crossings. The project used standard bridge design with twin cell standard pre-stressed concrete girders supported on spread footings. Due to the very high snow loads at the site, which sees annual snowfalls of 3 m, spans had to be limited to less than 20 m for the standard twin cell girders to be feasible.
