The Roger Pierlet Bridge carries 176 St. over the CP rail tracks in Cloverdale BC. As part of the Border Infrastructure Program the Ministry initially investigated widening or twinning the bridge to carry 4 lanes of traffic. The Ministry hired Ausenco Sandwell to assess the existing 20 span bridge condition and seismic performance and to review options to widen or twin the bridge.

After reviewing the structure, the Ministry decided to twin the bridge using a design build contract approach. Subsequently, the Owner’s Engineer Team retained Ausenco Sandwell to assist with the reviews of the design and construction, which was completed in 2006. During construction of the new bridge, an adjacent land owner piled topsoil right by the existing bridge to a significant height. This caused the bridge and supporting soils to displace laterally. While working for the Ministry, Ausenco Sandwell did push-over analyses of the bents to investigate the level of damage and safety to the structure, which was severely displaced.
