- Location:
- Burnaby Campus, BC, Canada
British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) hired Ausenco Sandwell to renovate and expand two existing laboratories on the Burnaby Campus. The Civil and Structural Laboratory was expanded to 150% of its original area. Work involved demolition of a section of the main load bearing wall replaced by new steel framing and footings, and included a new industry standard curing room. The Environmental Engineering Laboratory was totally renovated and modernised, including the creation of a special temperature/ humidity controlled room. The scope in both projects included new partition walls and millwork, energy efficient lighting upgrades, asbestos abatement, seismic restraint of key non-structural items, new ventilation systems, new compressed air and gas services, and code upgrades for plumbing services. Ausenco Sandwell as the prime consultant coordinated the architectural, mechanical and asbestos abatement sub-consultant, and provided all structural, seismic, civil, electrical, detailed design services, project management and contract administration and construction field services for the projects. Key issues included accommodating specific user requirements and carrying out the construction within a fully operating teaching facility.
