Ausenco Sandwell detailed designed the steel alternative for the South Approach Bridge to the Fraser River Bridge SkyTrain crossing in New Westminster, BC. The 745 m long continuous eleven span superstructure consisted of a precast post-tensioned deck slab supported by a composite steel box girder with six spans of 72.9 m and give spans of 61.5 m. Ductile concrete wall type piers up to 30 m high were designed to year earthquake event with no damage and a 1/475 year earthquake event with plastic hinging. The piers were supported on steel pipe piles driven to glacial till. An interesting feature of the bridge was the concrete pile caps located above ground to avoid expensive de-watering costs in poor soils with a water table near the surface.
