PWGSC hired Ausenco Sandwell to design the new Smith River Bridge to replace the existing structure which was narrow and in poor condition. The Smith River Bridge is located on the Alaska Highway at KM.792 approximately 300 km northeast of the town of Fort Nelson, BC. The old bridge consisted of +/- 61 m truss span with a +/- 13 m girder jump span. Ausenco Sandwell investigated upstream and downstream alignments for the new bridge and several structural options including:
• Two spans with pre-stressed concrete girders
• Single span steel I and box girders,
• Bridge length of 55 m to 76 m.
PWGSC selected a single span option and Ausenco Sandwell designed it with trapezoidal steel box girders, 55 m span, integral abutments founded on steel H-piles and a deck slab reinforced with GFRP bars.
