Structural Assessment of Large Hangar Facility

Brand:
Ausenco Sandwell
Client:
Canadian Airlines International (Now Air Canada)
Location:
Richmond, BC, Canada

This is a large combined maintenance hangar and operations centre located at the Vancouver International Airport. The facility is a steel framed structure constructed in the mid 1960s on potentially liquefiable soils. After a series of small earthquakes, the Canadian Airlines International (Now Air Canada) requested that Ausenco Sandwell assess a number of locations in the hangar area that were of concern to them. Ausenco Sandwell conducted an assessment on bowed bracing, unreinforced masonry walls and a cracked cantilevered concrete slab. The assessment found that the condition of these items will not affect the gravity load capacity of the structure, but will decrease their seismic capacity. A time frame for remediation was provided that would assist the client in its long term maintenance planning.
