The University Networking Program (UNP) involved 175 buildings and facilities in total. The project consisted of the installation of 6500 new ports and the upgrading of another 8500. Now all laboratories, classrooms and offices have state-of-the-art gigabit capable connections. In addition to the hardwired connections, most buildings have also been equipped with wireless LAN to IEEE 802.11b standards of 2.4 GHz and 11 Mbps. All buildings are interconnected by multimode and single mode fibre optic cabling. Each building received new switches, routers, patch panels and Gigabix terminals within both new and existing communication rooms. All copper is to Category 6 standard, which replaced any existing data port cabling. Wireless access points were installed in classrooms, libraries, offices and laboratories. Ausenco Sandwell’s engineering activities included:
• Conceptual design of cable routing and communications room locations
• Rack design, including routers, switches, patch panels and Gigabix terminals
• Building interconnection design
• Cabling infrastructure design, within the building, connecting voice/data to communication racks
• Inspections and construction services
