The Burrard Generating Station, a 960 MW natural gas fired generating plant, is located on the Burrard Inlet 20 km from Vancouver. The 6 units at the station were constructed during the 1960s and early 1970s, and BC Hydro decided to implement a series of projects to upgrade and optimise the operation of the plant. Ausenco Sandwell was selected in 1994 as the Engineering Consultant to carry out Phase 1 of the Burrard Upgrade Project for BC Hydro. This consisted of a plant life assessment of the station, installation of a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) to reduce NOX emissions on unit 5, the installation of an anhydrous ammonia storage system and the preparation of a number of plant studies. Following the successful completion of Phase 1, Ausenco Sandwell was selected as the lead Engineering Consultant to carry out Phase 2 of the project. Phase 2 included the installation of SCRs on units 4 and 6, the installation of new high pressure heaters on units 4, 5 and 6 and the refurbishment of various control systems and auxiliary systems.
