Vancouver Landfill Cogeneration Facility

Brand:
Ausenco Sandwell
Client:
Maxim Power Corp.
Location:
Delta, BC, Canada
Completed:
2003

Maxim Power invested in a bio-gas cogeneration project at the CanAgro Produce Ltd. greenhouse in Delta, BC. The bio-gas is piped in from the City of Vancouver landfill on the opposite side of Highway 99. The objectives of the project were to be cost effective, reliable, environmentally sensitive and adequately sized in order to utilise all of the present and future projected landfill gas flows.

Maxim awarded Ausenco Sandwell the EPCM contract for the landfill gas compression, conditioning equipment, and the transmission pipeline. The project included the design of a 3000-scfm two-step multi-stage centrifugal blower system with inter-stage gas chilling and condensate separation, all located at the landfill. A buried 3 km long 300 mm diameter HDPE pipeline connected the gas equipment at the landfill with the powerhouse located close to the greenhouse. The unattended landfill facility is fully automated and interfaced with the cogeneration control system. The cogeneration system is capable of generating up to 6 MW of power using Caterpillar 3532 engine gensets. Start-up took place in September 2003.
