Waste Wood Fuelled Power Plant

Brand:
Ausenco Sandwell
Client:
NW Energy Corporation
Location:
Williams Lake, BC, Canada

This 60 MW power generating station is fuelled by over 600,000 t/a of waste wood from five sawmills in Williams Lake in northern BC. Fuel trucks are unloaded on two hydraulic dumpers and the fuel is screened and hogged before being distributed to the storage site. Overhead reclaimers feed the B&W CCZ 550,000 lb/h boiler, supplying 1500 psi steam to a General Electric turbine.

Ausenco Sandwell was Owner’s Engineer for this $130 million project. Initial responsibilities included conceptual development and design assistance of the power island and fuel handling; miscellaneous studies to define project scope; alternatives for several areas including fuel supply, ash handling and disposal, and water supply. Ausenco Sandwell also prepared bid documents for the major EPC contract, and provided assistance in evaluation of tenders and in other technical issues required to reach financial closing.

In addition, Ausenco Sandwell provided engineering and procurement services for wood waste handling systems at the sawmills providing the hog fuel; procurement services for trucking hog fuel to the power plant, and procurement and engineering services for hauling and disposal of ash.
