BC Transit was commissioned in 1994 to provide a commuter rail service between Mission and Vancouver, and Ausenco Sandwell seconded staff to BC Transit for electrical engineering services. These services included detailed design services for substations in Vancouver and Mission, wayside power distribution, equipment and contract technical specifications, factory inspections of purchased equipment during manufacturing, and site inspection during installation. Procurement and inspections of locally manufactured and assembled equipment included wayside power equipment, lighting poles, power kiosks, and controls. Included in the scope of services was the coordination with utility companies for power and communication services to all passenger stations and the substations, and also for the relocation of several high voltage overhead power lines that interfered with the location of the passenger stations. Due to the fast-track nature of the project, the selection, procurement, and delivery of major equipment was critical to the success of the project, which was completed on schedule in 1996.
