The new Yoho Bridge replaces an existing bridge, which crosses the Kicking Horse River on the TransCanada Highway, approximately 8 kms east of Golden, BC, Canada. The old bridge was replaced due to its poor condition, two narrow traffic lanes, and poor alignment. The new bridge, carries four traffic lanes, on an improved alignment that intersects the existing bridge alignment. The Ministry prepared and tendered both steel and concrete designs of the bridge. The concrete design was the selected option.
Ausenco Sandwell prepared the steel design alternative, which consisted of a 190m long by 11.74m wide eastbound structure with three continuous spans of 48m, 62m and 45m and one 35m simply supported span. The westbound structure was 208m long by 11.74m wide with four continuous spans of 50m, 68m, 50m and 40m. The top of the deck slab was approximately 25m above the Kicking Horse River. The east and westbound structures each consist of three steel I-girders, concrete deck slabs, hammerhead type concrete piers and concrete abutments all supported on mini pipe piles. The girder configurations facilitate girder erection by launching at this particularly difficult site in terms of access and terrain. In addition, due to concerns regarding the stability of the existing slopes, each structure has approaches consisting of expanded polystyrene (EPS) fill protected with Lock Block facing walls.
