P.T. Indominco Mandiri retained Ausenco to design and supervise construction of the materials handling and shiploading facilities for its new 3.5 Mt/y coal mine at Bontang, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

We were responsible for planning, layout, detailed design, equipment selection and construction supervision of the materials handling systems for the mine, port stockyard and shiploading facilities.

The development was undertaken in phases: the interim facilities allowed early export of about 1.5 Mt/y of coal through a barge loading berth and the permanent facilities increased throughput to 3.5 Mt/y. Ausenco was involved from the initial stages of site selection to the commissioning of the completed facilities.

The final development includes a mine stockyard located approximately 40 km from the coast, a port stockyard located 4.2 km inland from the mangrove coastline and a shiploading berth, 2.1 km from the shore.

At the mine stockyard, coal is crushed, stockpiled, blended, reclaimed and loaded onto hauling trucks for delivery to the port stockyard where coal is discharged at the truck receiving station and stored in two stockpiles of export quality coal.

Coal is then reclaimed and transported by a 6.3 km long conveyor to the offshore berth where a quadrant ship loader loads it into vessels at a rate of 2 000 t/h. The berth can accommodate vessels ranging from 5 000 DWT barges to 70 000 DWT Panamax ships.

Identical rail mounted twin boom stackers were installed at the mine and port stockyards to stack coal at 1 000 t/h. Reclaim and blending operations are by chain type reclaim feeders fed by front-end loaders.
